A skilled painter, he was a pupil of Sam Hyde Harris whose influence is seen in his landscapes. A bachelor, he died in Los Angeles on January 8, 1955. Exhibited: Businessmen's Art Club of Los Angeles, 1936. Sierra Lake was previously owned by an "American art dealer and collector of California art. He wrote the definitive work on California artists (3 volumes)". This particular piece must have been believed to be a good example of Amos' work for such a dealer/author to have this piece included in his collection, and it could be in one of those 3 volumes on California Artists!

Comments/Other:   Wonderful quality painting on canvas. Photos don't do the piece justice. The green glows as does the sky. Signed in the lower right C.F. Beck and dated 1901. Christian Frederik Beck (1876-1954) is a listed artist. He studied between 1893-1897 at the Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen. He received a number of prizes, e.g. Sodrings Prize in 1899 (a motif from Fousingo So). He exhibited at Charlottenborg, but was actually also very active in the National Painters Association, both as an artist and as a board member. He was also a member of Charlottenborg's committee, The Council of the Academy and the "Kunstforeningen" (the Art Association). His works are represented in museums in Randers, Ribe, Copenhagen and Bornholm. His strong engagement in the National Painters Association was very clearly expressed in his art. Several of his paintings have interest for the history of civilization because they are picturing places, buildings and landscapes which no longer exist.

boyer painting - andrew boyer
Artist Name:   Boyer (Believed to be Andre vs. his father Emile)    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   1909-1981
Signature/Date/Other:   Lower Right Corner (and on the reverse)
(More info is available on the back, including the location and a number, etc.)
Nationality:   French
Subject or Title:   Light Snow at the Cafe St. Michel looking towards Notre Dame, Paris
(Unusual for these Paris street scenes to depict a dusting of snow - it is usually rain)
Size/Sight:   18"x22"
Frame:   Approx 28"x31" - Nice orate frame in very good condition with orange, black and gold highlights
Media:   Oil on Canvas
Condition:   No Known Issues (could be brighter if cleaned)
Comments/Other:   Andre Boyer early Mid Century Oil on Canvas, View of Notre Dame from the Boulevard Saint Michel. Signed Boyer lower right, countersigned en verso. In gilt wood frame with linen liner. Born in Paris in 1909, Andre Boyer exhibited at the Salon des Independants in 1927. Known for his Parisian Street Scenes. Believed to be the original frame selected by the artist. There is a number on the back as Boyer may have been keeping records of his work and where/when and to whom they were sold. Two other Boyers also painted in a similar fashion and of the same Paris street scenes. A similar Andre Boyer piece, perhaps smaller and in a very simple frame, of the same area but during a different time of the year sold at auction in 2016 for about $1800. Our Boyer depicts a winter scene with a light dusting of snow; the wonderful frame and the fact that there is snow (which is not often depicted in Boyer's paintings or Paris street scenes in general), make this a more interesting and desirable piece...

It incorporates both a Roseville bowl and candlestick, an Italian Tapestry and a unique large blue/white contemporary vase. The original drawing by the artist is show, was well as her drawing on the board as she is preparing to create the piece. Another image also shows the piece not quite finished. These unique photos show the creative process and is not commonly seen when one purchases a piece of art. The images will accompany the artwork when sold.

Chrissandra Unger is a Canadian painter and accomplished pianist who believes that art and music have close ties; elements of rhythm, harmony and texture being equally present in each creative facet. Color represents melodic shape and tone, composition being primary in both.

After receiving her A.L.C.M. in piano from the London College of Music in England, she studied at Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design in Vancouver, BC for three years.

Chrissandra's unique bas relief style developed over a number of years as a result of her passion for experimenting with an extensive variety of textured materials and various mediums. This time spent on testing trial and error "recipes" gave birth to a specific medium that is pliable when wet, yet durable and archival when dry. The black lines that design the image protrude giving the appearance that the piece is carved out of the board it is painted on.

Although she chooses specific themes and subject matters that are of personal interest to her, she believes the primary impact lies in her distinct technique.

Chrissandra sees art making as a process from start to finish and an experimentation in materials and creativity. Her work is part of private and corporate collections across Canada, the United States and internationally.

Georges d'Espagnat - flowers in a vase painting
Artist Name:   Georges d'Espagnat    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   1870 - 1950
Signature/Date/Other:   Signed lower right (initials - which is typical)
Nationality:   French
Subject or Title:   Flowers in a Blue and White Vase
Size/Sight:   22"x18-1/2"
Frame:   Ornate (Original Frame?) - European/French Design
Media:   Oil on Wood Panel
Condition:   No Known Issues. (Painting has been examined under U.V. light and there is no evidence of any repair or retouch.) The painting does not need a cleaning in particular. The overall condition of the frame appears good. There is some very minor separating in the corners of the frame which is to be expected for this style and age.
Comments/Other:
Born at Melun on 14th August 1870, Georges d'Espagnat went on to become one of the most individualistic of 20th century French painters.

Having moved to Paris at the age of 18 he declined academic training within the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and chose instead to independently study the works of the Old Masters in the Louvre. He also travelled to Italy where he admired the work of the Venetians, Titian and Tintoretto. In 1891 he participated in the Salon des Refuses and in the following year exhibited paintings at the Salon des Independants.

In 1895 he had his first one-man show in Paris and three years after that a show of his work was held at Durand-Ruel Gallery, as well as exhibitions in their New York Gallery. His works are associated with greatness as well as the company he kept. He was a close friend of Renoir (only ending with the master's death in 1919) and associated with Paul Signac, Henri Edmond Cross, Louis Valtat and later Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard. A group exhibition of 1907 at the Marcel Bernheim Gallery included himself, Bonnard, Cezanne, Matisse, Pissarro, Rouault, Seurat and Toulouse-Lautrec while a later exhibition at the same venue in 1926 consisted of d'Espagnat, Andre, Bonnard, Braque, Chagall, Matisse, Picasso and Signac. From 1936 onwards he served as a Professor at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and he died in the French capital on 17th April, 1950. The following year saw a retrospective exhibition at the Salon d'Automne, of which he had been Vice-President for many years.

Examples of his work include some of the world's most important museums: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Musee Royal des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Art Institute, Chicago, Pushkin Museum, Moscow, Musee d'Orsay, Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris, and the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo.

There is an old label verso which appears to be a collectors label "Mrs. Ethel B. Rabin - 200 West 57th Street, NY, NY." Ethen Rabin was a fashion designer for Berley Studios in NYC back in the 1920s. There is some evidence that she might have painted also. Her original fashions/designs sometimes come up for sale/auction.

Also, there are remnants of a French Gallery label.

A great piece, by a well-known listed artist, whose friends and associates are some of the best names in French Impressionism. This piece was owned by someone else in the art field who had made a name for herself also. She most likely purchased the piece from an art gallery while in Paris during her fashion designing career.

Edward Field painting
Artist Name:   Edward Loyal Field    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   1856-1919
Signature/Date/Other:   Lower Right (Edward L. Field)
Nationality:   American
Subject or Title:  Landscape with open field in foreground, typical East Coast rocks with small trees in mid-ground, growing darker as one peers towards the background.
Size/Sight:   Approximately 9 3/4" x 8"
Frame:   Approximately 18" x 16" (Looks like a newer frame)
Media:   Oil on Canvas with Overglaze
Condition:   No Known Issues
Comments/Other:   Information on the back indicates that this piece came out of Field's cottage in NY. Lengthy info about the artist and more is also to be found on the attached paper. Since this is a piece that hung in his cottage, he must have appreciated it and thought it a fine example of his work. This is a darker piece and needs light to see the colors - the flash shows off the colors you can see in the photos. Not sure if a cleaning would brighten it - could be that it just needs a cleaning, as it is 100 or so years old.

He was a fine late nineteenth century landscape etcher and painter, Edward Loyal Field studied art in Paris, France, under Carolus-Duran. He returned to the United States in 1882 and both lived and worked in Manhattan for the balance of his career. A full member of New York's prestigious Salmagundi Club, Field exhibited his art in major exhibitions in Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco. His paintings are being reproduced as giclees and his etchings can be found in galleries and other markets.

Comments/Other:   Gallery Tag is on frame. On the back is the following information:
J-S. Halem; A Tree Sept. in Smithtown, L.I.
Painted and sold in a gallery on Long Island.
Artist was contacted by MFA and he indicated that this was painted decades ago and in a style reminiscent of the old masters - and does indeed have that look! A very atmospheric mysterious feel to the piece; certainly has the look of a piece that one may see in a museum in the Dutch section and expects to be hundreds of years old.

Comments/Other:   To view Paul Jenkins work in a museum to something to behold. The color against a white surface stands out and is amazing. We learned of Paul Jenkins work from one of his many museum exhibitions through the US and Internationally. We experienced his work at the Crocker Museum in Sacramento, California back in about the March time frame. If there is an exhibition near you, by all means go!

To quote the Press Release from the Crocker - "Paul Jenkins' Post Expressionist paintings emphasizing light and color will be on view at the Crocker Art Museum in "Paul Jenkins: The Color of Light" from December 11, 2010 through February 20, 2011. His signature style emerged during the 1950s and took its place alongside the achievements of the Abstract Expressionists and painters of the Color Field movement, yet Jenkins' paintings do not fit either of these movements neatly. Instead Jenkins pursued an independent celebration of color and optical experience. This exhibition features 50 examples of the artist's achievements in watercolor, as well as additional works on canvas. The distinctive look of a Jenkins painting rests in his unorthodox approach to applying pigment. Over six decades, he has honed his manipulation of paint by pouring, pushing, and working wet-on-wet. His technique results in translucent, mystical veils of color that capture light. The spirituality expressed in the artist's work embodies Jenkins' continuing interest in Eastern religions and philosophy, the writings of Carl Jung, and his own desire to explore the inner recesses of his unconscious mind in a colorful, visual way.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised near Youngstown, Ohio, Jenkins first studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute. He arrived in New York City in 1948 and studied at the Art Students League under the well-known painter Yasuo Kuniyoshi. New York at this moment was a hotbed of artistic activity: Abstract Expressionism was at its height, and Clement Greenberg's art criticism ruled the day. Jenkins met Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko, all of whom greatly influenced the emergence of Jenkins' own style. Greenberg admired his paintings. In 1953, Jenkins met the French art critic Michel Tapie who also championed the new improvisatory manner of abstraction then evolving. From this experience, Jenkins derived an appreciation for gestural painting and a passion for Mediterranean light and color."

More information on Paul Jenkins: "During the 1950's, Jenkins achieved international fame for his enigmatic painterly abstractions. He became interested in using fluid veils of color to evoke mysterious, shifting spaces and non-representational gestures. This led him to title his paintings, "Phenomena's" often accompanied by an additional identifying phrase. Jenkins states, "I try to find the identity word that will secure an attitude towards the painting rather than provoke a visual object that the eye will seek out."

The owner of Methuen Fine Art would like to comment on Paul Jenkins Art: "It was in March of 2011 that I visited The Crocker Museum in Sacramento for the first time. There was an exhibit of a contemporary living artist by the name of Paul Jenkins. A room was dedicated to his work as well as some wall space just outside of the exhibition. The Crocker also has at least one work of his in their permanent collection, as this was seen at that time as well as during a second visit in 2012. To view Mr. Jenkins work was really something, and I am not a collector of contemporary art. However, the contrast of white canvas or bright white watercolor paper, with solid pure colors that seem splashed, mingled and swirled on the surface, together with the size of these pieces, was indeed something to behold. I think the viewer would initially say to themselves - WOW! I also see viewers looking at his work and saying - 'I can to that or my child can do that'; BUT, if one looks more closely and contemplates exactly how one would go about creating a similar piece, that is when the viewer will realize they are mistaken - creating this art is not child's play. There are lots of various steps and methods behind it. I have often looked at both the watercolor below as well as the acrylic piece in inventory. I can figure out how some of it was done, but there is much more as well as those areas I still haven't figured out! "

Both the watercolor and acrylic in the MethuenFineArt inventory are fine examples of his art. One can look at these two pieces by Mr. Jenkins for periods of time and admire the color, both solid and mixed, and only wonder....just as the new owners of these pieces will do the same!

We have based the price lower than what other quality watercolors of Jenkins of this size have been selling for. With his death, we anticipate prices paid to go up dramatically.

This wonderful artist has just passed away on June 9th, 2012 at the age of 88.

Paul Jenkins work continue to increase after his death, and his values are currenty higher in Europe than the U.S. currently, but prices are increasing as he is much sought after.

Ralph Love painting
Artist Name:   Ralph Love    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   1907-1992
Signature/Date/Other:   Lower Left (Love)
Nationality:   American
Subject or Title:   "Symphony in Red" (Painted Canyon, Near Mecca)
Size/Sight:   Approximately 20" x 24" (a nice large piece!)
Frame:   Original Frame - original liner replaced because of staining and age; original liner can accompany piece if desired; the liner has been replaced with a navy blue with grey/earth frame (Larson Juhl $200) which accents the piece wonderfully. Since this is not a liner but a frame, it won't require replacing as most liners require with time. 28" x 33" framed
Media:   Oil on Board (Masonite?)
Condition:   No Known Issues
Comments/Other:   Painted in the vicinity of Mecca, CA and stated on back. This piece is marked #865. Information on the back is available in the links below.

Comment from the artists daughter: "#865 is in the Borrego Desert area, I think... This painting was done in 1965. He would sketch on location and take slides, then go back to his studio to do more paintings...I think it's a magnificent study of the way he painted rocks...."
Mecca is at the Northern tip of the Salton Sea. The Borrego Desert is west of the sea. Not exceedingly far apart.

Ralph Love is one of the well know artists painting in areas of California and the Southwest. His paintings hang in several other museums throughout the west, including the Northern Arizona Museum in Flagstaff, Arizona, the Phillips 66 Museum, the Leanin' Tree Museum in Boulder, as well as in Colorado, Oklahoma and California.. Ralph Love was perhaps most best known for painting the Grand Canyon. Arizona Life has featured his work on covers as well as the inside spread, showing several of his original oils depicting the Grand Canyon. Senator Barry Goldwater owned several of of the Grand Canyons pieces, and these are now in the Goldwater Museum.

This is a rather large piece showing Love's capturing of color and texture which one can see in similar rock and canyon scenes, as well as Grand Canyon pieces, ranch scenes and many other of his works. It is with pleasure that we offer this fine western oil by one of the West Coast's Fine Artists!

Auction highs for this artist are up to $10,000 (2005) with prices in art galleries being even higher.
(Far higher auction prices have now been recorded)

Dates:   1912-1988
Signature/Date/Other:   Signed front (W Mills) and back; title also on the back.
Nationality:   American
Subject or Title:   "Gold Country School"
An old school house in springtime in Gold Country, CA
Size/Sight:   9"x12"
Frame:  Reframed - 15"x18" including the liner
Another super match of the frame to the piece of art! The frame picks up the blues and grey-browns-beige in the piece as does the wheat colored liner. Cost of the Larson Juhl frame and liner was approximately $200 (wholesale). Note - we used this frame as a liner on our Ralph Love 'Sympony in Red' - it has a texture, a navy blue base with greyish-brown highlights.
Media:   Oil on Artist Board
Condition:   No Known Issues
Comments/Other:   Unusual piece showing a one room school house in Gold Country California. The flowers, river bed, trees, bright sunshine and mountains in the back talk specifically about the beauty of this part of the country! Another great Larson Juhl frame and liner! Listed California Artist. Mills has an auction record of $4888 as of 2009. His work sells for far more in upscale galleries.

Nationality:   American
Subject or Title:   "March in Vermont"
Title, Date, Location and Artist Name appear on the back; written by the artist himself
Size/Sight:   18"x24"
Frame:   29.5"x23.5" Framed by the artist - he like the gold liner that accents the colors in the piece. Unusual for a black frame vs. the typically 'gallery' gold frame.
Media:   Oil on Artist Board
Condition:   No Known Issues. Excellent Condition (direct from the artist)
Comments/Other:   This piece came directly from the artist and was used in an advertisement for the gallery. We have been following TM's work since about 2003 and have been waiting for a very special piece to become available. The sky in this piece is unusual, the melting snow, distant scenes and colors tending towards purples and mauves is marvelous. It certainly gives one the impression of March in Vermont during an early spring thaw....

This piece was featured in an important art magazine advertising the Nicholas Gallery!

George Noyes painting
Artist Name:   George Loftus Noyes    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   1864 - 1954
Signature/Date/Other:   Lower Left (G. L. Noyes)
Nationality:   American (born in Canada to American parents)
Subject or Title:   Beautiful still life with asian statue, copper pot with flowers, as well as a bowl with grapes/apples/plums - all sitting on a colorful tablecloth.
Size/Sight:   25"x30"
Frame:   Very nice heavy carved wooden frame of multi colors. An older frame that could be original or perhaps reframed by Noyes himself. Frame is about 3" wide. Condition is really nice and doesn't need replacing - which is unusual. This particular piece has been well cared for over the past 60+ years.
Media:   Oil on Canvas - Nice tight canvas - again, this was probably a very much loved piece and someone knew that this was one of Noyes' Finest Still Lifes.
Condition:   No Known Issues (doesn't look like it needs a cleans, but could brighten the piece)
Comments/Other:   This is a fine example and perhaps one of the best still lifes by Noyes. His technique, colors and composition is incredible. The brush strokes are amazing and is a fine example of Impressionism - the brush strokes and color upon close examination seem random and meaningless, but step a few feet back and this bright well done painting takes shape into a finely detailed image!

Noyes had studied at the Massachusetts Normal School with George Bartlett in the early 1880s, heading for France and studying at the Academie Colarossi in Paris between 1890-93. There he worked under Ernest Courtois, LeBlanc, the great landscape painter Paul Louis Delance and under the guidance of the master, Jean Andre Rixens. Rixens influenced him to a huge degree, providing mastery and the vision to record with clear luminosity, so evident in his still life painting. Under their great guidance and tutoring, Noyes would become e a competent and notable Impressionist.

Later a member of the Boston Art Club, the Boston Society of Watercolour Painters, the Guild of Boston Artists, the North Shore Art Association and a charter member of the National Society of American Artists, he exhibited throughout New England and won awards at both the Buenos Aires and Pan-Pacific International Expositions in 1910 and 1915 respectively.

During his life he exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Galleries, solo exhibitions at the Hatfield Galleries in Boston in 1906. Further successful exhibitions at the Copley Society, no less than 6 times and also at the influential Vose Galleries also in Boston. Noyes showed at the St. Botolphe Club in Boston in 1915 and the Guild of Boston Artists, at least 4 times.

At the turn of the century, Noyes began teaching a summer class at Annisquam, Massachusetts and became mentor to one of the great American artist Newell Convers Wyeth. (1882-1945) who was to become one of America's best loved painters. Noyes had permanent studios for most of his life in Boston. East Gloucester (from 1893 to 1931), but in Winter Park in Florida (between 1931 and 35) returning to Pittsford-Branden, in Vermont from about 1935.

Noyes worked and painted at the Fenway Studios on Ipswich Street starting in 1906 where unfortunatly in 1939, a fire was to destroy hundreds of his works of art.

Noyes also traveled extensively, painting throughout Europe. He had visited both France and Italy numerous times, as well as North Africa and Mexico, where he searched for the perfect light that Impressionists always seek.

Martin Ocana painting
Artist Name:   Martin Ocana    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   20th Century
Signature/Date/Other:   Signed boldly in orangy red in the lower left hand corner (Martin Ocana)
Probably painted in about the 1950s/1960s.
Nationality:   Spanish
Subject or Title:   Seems to be a surrealist view of the edge of a town at twilight (just as the sun is rising), with water in the foreground.
Size/Sight:   15 1/2" x 12"
Frame:   A very unique and fancy frame - appears to be hand carved for the piece; 24" x 21 1/2" framed size
Media:   Oil on Canvas
Condition:   A few very small chips of paint missing. Liner could use replacing and the edging between the frame and liner could be cleaned perhaps with a solvent. On the back seems to be a price tag of 1200. Back of canvas is sealed with paper and looks to be original. It is believed it could be much brighter if cleaned, but currently provides more of a mood perhaps along the lines of the actual scene - which is believed to be a city at dusk situated on the edge of a river.
Comments/Other:   Listed Spanish Surrealist Oil Painting Martin Ocana. His work is said to be very much in the modernist surreal urban style that was popular around the world during the late 1960s and the 1970s, as it still is today. Martin Ocana is a well-known Spanish painter, working in Malaga and Torremolinos during the mid 20th century. His work is often of city scenes with figures and always has an element of mystery and movement. His paintings are sold at auctions and galleries and he is listed in art references, including ArtPrice and Davenport's Art Reference and Price Guide. This painting is quite interesting both in composition and technique. We have seen other pieces of his work and feel this stands head and shoulders above all the others.

Artist Name:   Guido Odierna    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   1913 - 1991
Signature/Date/Other:
Nationality:   Italian
Subject or Title:
Size/Sight:   27" x 19.25"
Frame:   New Custome Cut/Joined Larson Juhl frame ($500 - wholesale)
Media:   Oil on Canvas
Condition:   No Known issues
Frame was modified in the back to show less of the actual painting to hide some glue that someone had used to secure the canvas to the liner previously. None of this can be seen.
Comments/Other:   Known for his seascapes of Italy, especially Capri, his works has sold at both Christies of Rome as well as Kensington. This particular piece we believe to be one of his finest incorporating luminescent waves and a beautiful sky before or after a storm. From other examples of his work, they tend to be dark without much color. This is why we feel this is a very special piece! (The frame is a great match to the painting because it picks up the orange, mauves and some purple, not to mention the earth tones of the rocks). We have seen about 5 or more pieces owned by an individual in CA who had met and befriended Odierna. Of all of the pieces that the owner of Methuen Fine Art has seen by this artist, as well as those images found on line of ones that have sold in the past, this particular painting below is one of his best works!

Artist Name:   Fernand Patte    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   1857 - 1946
Signature/Date/Other:   Lower Right Corner (F.Patte)
Nationality:   French
Subject or Title:   Wonderful landscape with dirt road lined with trees and a slight glow at horizon.
A really great Barbizon piece by a talented French Artist.
Size/Sight:   Approximately just over 13x21"
Frame:   Seems to be an old frame, possibly the original one. Frame is just over 3" wide. (approx 16"x24")
Media:   Oil on Beveled Wooden Board
Condition:   No Known Issues. Professionally cleaned.
Comments/Other:   This is the epitome of a Barbizon Painting and by a French Artist too! Like most of our our works of art for sale, this is also by a listed artist. This is very similar in style to those paintings of the same age that the owner of Methuen Fine Art viewed in the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA back in April 2011. Vladimir Pavlosky painting - autumn scene
Artist Name:   Vladimir Pavlosky    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   1884-1944
Signature/Date/Other:   Lower left hand corner (Vladimir Pavlosky)
Nationality:   Russian American
Subject or Title:   Autumn Scene with small pond, homes and mountains
Definitely New England, possibly NH or VT, but most likely Western MA outside of Boston.
Size/Sight:   24" x 36"
Frame:   Frame measures approximately 41 3/4 x 29 1/2".
Media:   Oil on Canvas
Condition:   Expected craquelure and surface grime after about 60 years. Still very bright.
Liner is dirty and could use replacing, cleaning or painting.
Comments/Other:   Pavlosky, born in the Russian Ukraine and descended from three previous generations of artists, came to America via Poland at the age of 20 to avoid military conscription. Settling in Boston, he was attracted by the colorful fishing communities of the North Shore and soon specialized in portraying the life of the Cape Ann fishermen and the spectacular scenery of the Gloucester area. His entry in the 1923 Museum of Fine Arts Boston artists\' competition placed Second to John Singer Sargent\'s First. Pavlosky outlined his working method and philosophy of art in a contemporary newspaper interview: "Sometimes a painter has to stop and think about his work, and wonder if he could do better in a different manner. When I feel that mood, I take up my violin and walk around the studio playing. After a few minutes of rest that way I have a fresh idea, and with my violin and bow in my left hand I put in some quick strokes with the brush and often do much better than if I had not played...The artist should be the happiest man alive, because art and the love of the beautiful are the finest gifts God has made us. The joy of catching the living world with a few strokes of the brush and a few colors is unending. All good painting should express the beauty of Nature." He exhibited widely to great success, including shows at the Grace Horn Gallery, Vose Galleries, the Gallery-on-the-Moors, the Gloucester Society of Artists, the Gloucester Art Association and the North Shore Arts Association.

Pavlosky was a Boston watercolorist and exhibited his works widely in Boston galleries and museum shows from the 1920s to his death in 1944. He is best known for his landscapes, many of New England coastal subjects, as well as fishing and hunting scenes. His obituary referred to him as [one] of the foremost water color painters in greater Boston , and a leading member of the Boston Society of Water Color Painters. He also completed many mural commissions in Boston , including St. Mary's Polish Church in Boston and the Fenway and Orpheum Theaters. In 2002, a large group of his paintings was rediscovered, leading to a renewed interest in his work among art collectors and historians.

In the 1920s, Pavlosky's painting The White Peacock was awarded second prize at an exhibition of the works of Boston artists at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston -- the first prize was won by John Singer Sargent. Pavlosky received great publicity for this, including an article in a Boston periodical by M.J. Curl entitled Boston Artists and Sculptors in Intimate Talks saved by Pavlosky with his personal papers. In the article, the author quotes Pavlosky's personal philosophy of art: An artist should be a good, honest man, true to his work, true to nature. Art is the expression of the soul; to paint well one must live well. The moment an artist begins to think whether his work will sell, he does less commendable work, he is less of an artist.

We saw one of his works selling at $14,000 in a gallery in 1987. In 2004, a 25"x30" oil of his s old for over $8,000 and a watercolor sold for just under $4,000 in 2006. These were sold at auction and therefore sold at much less than what one would expect in a gallery. Our price of only $6,700 is a steal for this artists work! This Autumn Scene is also a very large piece for this artist.

Alexis Podchernikoff painting
Artist Name:   Alexis Podchernikoff    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   1886 - 1933
Signature/Date/Other:   Signed, Lower Left Hand Corner (AMPodchernikoff) and has a plaque (A.M.Podchernifkoff) on the frame
Nationality:   Russian American
Subject or Title:   Path through tree-lined landscape with distant mountains at sunset - California.
Size/Sight:   20"x16"
Frame:   Fancy/Ornate Frame - Could be Original (read more in Comments)
Media:   Oil on Canvas
Condition:   Craquelure throughout the piece showing the age, but no flaking, paint missing, damage or anything else. A fine piece by this artist who became known for his CA scenes which are much sought after currently.
Comments/Other:   A wonderful California scene showing distant mountains, trees, a path, perhaps in fading light, with the last rays of light illuminating the distant mountains in an orange glow. Has a gold plate indicating the artist. Frame may be original - ornate and heavy. There is a label on the back which seems to indicate the frame in San Francisco - they no longer exist. Could use a cleaning to lighten the artwork up, but has a more antique look currently. A beautiful important piece of CA history owned previously by a historically-known individual.

Provenance: The Estate of Julius Hauser, Los Angeles, CA by family descent.

Alexis Matthew Podchernikoff was born in Vladimir, Russia in 1886 into a family of artists. Podchernikoff first studied art with his grandfather Dmitri Zolotarieff and later with Ilya Repin and Verestchagin. In Moscow he was awarded a gold medal and his work "My Beloved Russian Woods" was purchased by the Royal Art Commission. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1905 after the Russo-Japanese War and settled in San Francisco. In February of 1901, he married fellow-painter Ida Working. In 1913 an art dealer from Santa Barbara convinced Podchernikoff to move there. A painting of his Santa Barbara studio appeared on the front cover of Literary Digest, March 10, 1928. Although he spent the last 20 years of his life in Southern California he returned often to San Francisco to paint scenes of Marin and the northern coast. He is well-known in California for his landscapes done in the manner of Corot. His last years were spent in Pasadena where he died on Oct. 31, 1933 of tuberculosis. Works held: Oakland Museum; Royal Art Commission, Moscow and many other museums and art galleries.

Signature/Date/Other:   Lower right hand corner (Geo Rombach)
Nationality:   Possibly Belgian
Subject or Title:   A beautiful day with blue sky/white clouds in an open field with trees and a haystack
Size/Sight:   17-3/4 x 19-3/4 inches
Frame:   21x23 inches - Nice older frame, some slight damage as seen in photos
Media:   Oil on wood (appears to have been primed)
Condition:   Good. A cleaning would brighten it. Seems to have 3 relatively small chips of paint loss as seen in photos.
Comments/Other:   A very nice piece of a haystack in a green pasture with trees in the background, on a sunny day with a blue sky and puffy white clouds - an idealistic scene! A bright scene when illuminated. On the back is "Belgium". The signature is one of most interesting signatures we have encountered over the years. The signature consists of a very fancy G surrounding the last name and "eo" to the far right. The last name is surrounded by the fancy G. The signature is really wonderful! We wanted verification of the signature to insure we were interpreting it correctly, and contacted a well known auction house which indicated that it was a "Rombach" with an high auction value of about $2000 in 2012.

Nationality:   Danish
Subject or Title:   Looking down a dirt road into the distance with various trees on both sides as well as fences, one being a snow barrier.
Size/Sight:   Approx 19"x26"
Frame:   Approx 23"x30" We understand that this is a frame made by a well known famous framemaker. Frame is in good condition and could be an added bonus to the painting!
Media:   Oil on Canvas
Condition:   No Issues Known. A cleaning would brighten it, but not necessary.
Comments/Other:   If you search on line for "Peter Johan Schou" you will find many hits for prints and reproductions of this artists' paintings of flowers. As can be seen in this painting, he is a master of detail. Though this woodland seen is probably from his native country, we also think that it looks like parts of the United States! This could be a real sleeper, due to the fine painting AND what is said to be an important frame! Frames can go for many thousands of dollars depending on the maker. The stamp on the frame is from the well know art dealer - Georg Kleis. Obviously, an important piece because of the dealer that originally sold it, as well as the frame. Dates:   1890 - 1973
Signature/Date/Other:   Lower left corner (J. Earl Schrack '47"
Nationality:   American
Subject or Title:   Young Native American Woman(?) drawing water from a well and filling a clay vessel
Size/Sight:   16.5"x21"
Frame:   24"x29" Stacked Frame consisting of wood, a gold border and white inner border. Believed to be original!
Media:   Oil on Canvas laid onto Board
Condition:   No Known Issues. Professionally cleaned. Just some slight grime which caused the piece to be darker than it should have been. Incredible pallette colors now visible! The pinks, other colors and fine details were hidden behind years of varnish and dirt.
Comments/Other:   We have seen a few of this artists work and this is a wonderful example. The others have been landscapes and didn't feel they had merit when compared to this piece. This is thought to be a Native American, perhaps in AZ/NM/CA. J. Earl Schrack was the President of the Academy of Creative Arts, Roerich Museum, New York. in the 1930s.

Earl was a painter, who after attending several art schools as a young man, traveled and studied in Europe, and taught art classes for many years. He changed the spelling of his surname from Schrock, which had become traditional in America, to Schrack, which he felt to be more up-to-date. He followed the esoteric Christian tradition as an active member of the Rosicrucian Fellowship. He also taught art at the Nicholas Roerich Museum in New York. For a number of years, Earl published an esoteric journal called Toward the Highest.

After the death of his young wife, Fanny Elizabeth Stahly, in 1931, he married Elizabeth Bloomberg. In the later part of his life they lived in San Diego, CA, where he continued to paint and was a popular art teacher.

M. Shaw painting
Artist Name:   M. Shaw    (Original Artwork)
Dates:   Unknown
Signature/Date/Other:   Lower right hand corner (M. Shaw )
Nationality:   Unknown
Subject or Title:   Very bright scene depicting flowers in a vase, with a bowl of fruit, book, a blue/white vase by a large window overlooking what seems to be a valley with possibly eucalyptus trees. Very likely California(?).
Size/Sight:   24"x36"
Frame:   29.5"x40.5" New Larson Juhl Frame; great match to the piece ($560 frame)
Media:   Oil on Canvas
Condition:   No known Issues - Professionally Cleaned
Comments/Other:   We don't know who this M. Shaw is, but the composition, the color and the technique is great! Reminiscent of some Cezanne Fruit Still Lifes. There are cases where there are no signatures or the artist may not be a listed artist, but the work is beautiful. This is such a case. Perhaps M. Shaw is a listed artist, but so far, we haven't found any works of art with this signature and style. Like many of the pieces we have in stock, there is far more value here than we are asking. The markup in a retail gallery would be far more - this is a large, newly framed, cleaned and wonderfully vibrant piece. Just an incredible piece with color!!!....

Media:   Watercolor (dry brush) on Board - Gouache
Condition:   No Known Issues
Comments/Other:   A member of the Cowboy Artists of America and the American Watercolor Society, Ray Swanson was known for his Southwest Native American subjects, which included the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and Apache Indians. Raised in South Dakota, Swanson settled in Carefree, Arizona where he first visited a Navajo Reservation in Arizona sometime in the early 1960s. From that time on, he incorporated Indian figures and genre into his subject matter. Nice piece in keeping with Swanson's Southwest Genre. Large and looks more like a photo than a painting, again, very typical of his work!

His paintings have been auctioned off at figures as high as $108,000 (2012) - "Movin' Through Dry Country ".

From Ray Swanson's Daughter: "You have an interesting watercolor painting by Ray, which he painted in 1969 at his studio in Oak Glen, California (Yucaipa ,CA address). At that period in his career, he called his watercolors, "drybrush watercolors". Later he referred to them as "gouache" but he used gouache paint for them. He achieved the remarkable detail by using very little water with his pure watercolor paints. The approximate value is $14,000. for this size."

Size/Sight:   18"x32

(approx 2 and VERY small - in the background)
Comments/Other:   This was an artist killed in his prime and before his name was commonly known in the art world. You can see the talent in this still life. As others have said, finding his work is rare. "Painter and teacher. Born in San Francisco in 1862 to French parents. In about 1866, moved to Dijon, France with his parents. They could not return to the U.S. until after the Franco Prussian War. He returned to San Francisco in 1877 where he studied art at the School of Design. Returned to France in 1885 to study at the Academie Julian. After 6 more years in France, he returned to SF where he opened a studio. Became active in the local art scene and was becoming a known artist. In 1895, three years after this painting was completed, he was killed in a bicycle accident. "His RARE works includes still lifes and landscapes".

Jerry Venditti painting
Artist Name:   Jerry Venditti    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   Born 1942
Signature/Date/Other:   Signed lower left (J. Venditti '86)
Nationality:   American
Subject or Title:   "Southwest Elegance" - Southwestern Still Life
Size/Sight:   Approximately 32.5" X 29.5" (a larger example of his work)
Frame:   38.5" x 36"
Media:   "My paintings are all acrylic on canvas, finished with Soluvar varnish."
Condition:   No Known Issues
Comments/Other:   "For me painting is a spiritual activity in that it is my way of sharing the beauty in the essence of all things."
"A Master of the painstaking and demanding technique of trompe l'oeil, a French term meaning "to fool the eye," Venditti's intense attention to detail is immediately evident in his work. The illusion of a third dimension is so powerful that the viewer is tempted to reach out and touch the objects in the painting."
"Master of the trompe l'oeil technique of painting, Jerry Venditti's desire isn't "to fool the eye," with his fine oil paintings, rather it is to enhance, highlight and expound the profundity of what is. Whether an arrangement of Native American pottery, a bowl of fruit or a time dimensionalized image, steeped in antiquity and accurate historic relevance, there is nothing still about a Venditti still life." - quote from Jerry Vendittis website...

Venditti's work is collected internationally in private collections, major corporations and museums. Venditti and his art have been featured in numerous magazines including Art & Antiques, Southwest Art, US Art, Art in America and Art Talk.

Vendittis artwork can range from a few thousand all the way up to $65,000. A very similar piece to this one was sold for $15,000 back in about the 2006 timeframe. You can see the photo and price in the links below.

The fine detail and photographic feel of his work is amazing. His skill can be seen in this wonderful Southwestern still life!

Kurt Vogler painting
Artist Name:   Kurt Vogler(?)    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   Unknown
Signature/Date/Other:   Lower left hand corner. Kurt Vogler or ? (Signature is hard to read - could be very stylistic)
Nationality:   German
Subject or Title:   "Early spring in Teufelsmoor, Close to Worpswede"
Beautiful country scene with water, road, solitary typical tree for that area and a distant town way in the background.
Size/Sight:   30"x22"
Frame:   35"x27" A newer frame. Painting might have been larger in the past.
Media:   Oil on Canvas
Condition:   No Known Issues - could use a light cleaning
Comments/Other:   The piece of paper that was attached to this piece indicates that the artist is K. Vogler and has his biography. The signature on the painting is very distinctive, but may not actually be K. Vogler. Whoever did this piece, it is a wonderful European scene with a city in the distance, an overcast sky, pink highlights on the water, bright greens scattered throughout. On the back of the painting, it seems to have been numbered as many artists do (for their records) and the translation is: "Early spring in Teufelsmoor, Close to Worpswede"

Roel Wildeboer still life painting Roel Wildeboer still life painting
Artist Name:   Roel Wildeboer    (Original Artwork - Listed Artist)
Dates:   (1902 - ?)
Signature/Date/Other:   Labels indicate artist. Signature and Titles may be on panel which is currently obscured/covered.
Nationality:   Danish
Subject or Title:   Still Lifes
Size/Sight:   12"x16"
Frame:   18"x24"; Frames show some minor wear after all these decades, but still in fine condition Would not consider reframing - the frames are really nice.
Media:   Oil on Beveled Board
Condition:   Good considering age - could use a cleaning, but not necessary The darkness adds to the look of an Old Master.
Comments/Other:   A pair of wonderful still lifes from the artist Roel Wildeboer - a well known listed artist and assumed to be Danish. These paintings are really attractive and remind one of Dutch/Danish still lifes seen in many museums. If you look closely, there is a lot of detail and one is surprised that what one thinks is one fruit, is actually another, or perhaps even onions, etc!

The two pieces were sold by a well known (if not the best art gallery in the Columbus area) David Bendann's Fine Art Room, established in 1859. One can google and see a name change, but they are still in business... The label for the Fine Art Room is on the back of both pieces. The other painting has a printed section which describes the life of the artist, which is shown below and in a photo attached. Because one painting doesn't contain this information, I believe that this was most likely sold as a pair.

"Roel Wildeboer - Born in Hilversum Holland in 1899. Comes from a family of artists. Very versatile in styles and subjects, he excels in still lifes which he does in the 18th Century fine detailed style. His paintings enjoy great popularity."

Paintings are on old beveled wooden panels, so that in itself hints at the age. Panel measures about 12"x16". Could be cleaned and it would show up more detail (initially when one looks quickly, this looks like an old dutch master and one doesn't see all the small detail or even the grapes until one re-looks and studies the piece); would probably not have it cleaned.

Good value here for someone looking for a good quality listed artist - framed and ready to hang, AND a PAIR.
